OLATINI RESIDENCE: ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS AFTER ONE YEAR
'Cleanliness they say is next to godliness,' and what some also say about 'the health of a nation determines how wealthy that nation is'.
These two maxims stress on the need for us to appreciate and to adopt practices that can promote good environmental sanitation and cleanliness, and eventually pave the way for good health of people.
On Saturday 2nd June 2018, residents of Olatini Street in Kilo town, Surulere,
Lagos State, embarked on a sanitation exercise, ridding the streets and drainages of dirts, block drainages and other things affecting sanitary condition of the street. This was a first in the last one year.
Lagos State one of Nigeria‟s most prominent political
subdivisions, has for some years, been organizing a general sanitation
exercise on the last Saturday of every month. But, On March 16, 2015, a federal court
nullified the restriction order on
movement in respect of the monthly
environmental sanitation held in
Lagos State, southwest Nigeria every
last Saturday morning (7-10a.m).
For this reason, Olatini residents have continued thriving in an environment that is not only an eyesore but very unhealthy.
Before the exercise, these are some photos of what's Olatini street and drainages looked like
It was gathered that the exercise was executed after several warning from Environmental Sanitation Officers and Various hazards that came with the raining season because of the dirts.
Shortly after the clean-up, a long time resident Mr Bisi Dada commended their efforts

She added that it would be in their best interest to make this a monthly activity, rather than yearly.
It can be said at this point that, The cancellation, of the popular monthly environmental sanitation exercise by the Lagos State Government is not a well-considered decision given the mounting environmental challenges in the city and the fact that people have not attained the level of needed personal hygiene and cleanliness.
Nonetheless, It is the civic responsibility of citizens to keep their surroundings clean. This should be inculcated in children from schools, as making people imbibe the culture of sanitation and personal hygiene is more effective than legislation.

The Lagos State Government should, therefore, consider this in its environmental reform programme.
