#STUDENTWEEK2018: NIJ LIGHT UP EXPERIENCE

The distinctive symbolic free lecture week and the heart of entertainment of the Nigerian Institute Of Journalism otherwise known as Student week 2018 had old and new students of the institution come together for an event that could be best described as awesome.
The week-long ceremony had active participation from students, lecturers, stakeholder and media personalities alike, who engaged in exciting, entertaining and insightful activities cut across each days from 7th to 12th May 2018.
First introduced in 2011, the student week is an annual event characterized by colour, glamour, style and entertainment. It is scheduled around the second semester of every academic year, and it features unique activities like sports competition, community service, carnival, pageantry, talent display, games, career mentoring, award night e.t.c. Its popularity has grown over the years, and made it a period so many look forward to.
This year’s event being its 7th edition kicked off with a commendable level of enthusiasm from students and lecturers, who prepared excitedly.
Before its commencement, students, lecturers, alumni, and stakeholders came together for an awareness walk and community service, 10th of may, as part of the pre student week activities.
They engaged in clean up activities in strategic positions around Ogba community, and rallied around the town against child abuse, sensitizing the public on the need to protect and educate a child. They also held a burn fire night on the eve before the Student week started.

However, the main ceremony featured activities such as carnival, pageantry, sports competition, talent display, old school day, cultural day and award night.
#DAY1: CARNIVAL/CONCERT DAY
On first day of the ceremony, 7th may 2018, student excitedly trooped into the school premises in their numbers from 8am ready for the days treat. Some who had booked for spots to sells products and resources, quickly took positions to showcase for prospective buyers.
Before mid day, they were joined by alumni, lecturers, friends and stake holders of the institution.
Together they went round Ogba, Ojodu and Ikeja dressed in colorful outfits, dancing and telling all in sight of the student week.
Later that evening, they converged in the school arena for a musical concert which featured various artistes like Sugar boy, Percilaw Jose Phyn, Ajura 96 amongst others.

#DAY2: CULTURAL DAY/MOVIE PREMIERE
The second day of the student week activities which was set aside to celebrate the diverse and rich culture of our country among students started from 10am, as participants gathered in the school auditorium.
The event saw the introduction of different cultural attires, cultural dances, songs and massive participation like the day before.
Among notable personalities who graced the day are Provost of the institution, Mr Gbemiga Ogunleye, Deputy Provost of the institution, Mr Jide Johnson and the Baale Of Omole, Chiefe Nairu Bakare who commended the students for upholding their heritage.
Later that day, participants were treated to a movie premiere organized by full time post graduate students tittle“Dark”.
The movie which was also acted by students of the institution, had a strong message on domestic violence to participants.
Before viewing, the producer, Adekunbi Kuye, a post graduate student of the institution, met with correspondent Mercy, and shed more light on the project

The movie was a course project, and was screened under the watch of veteran actor and film maker, Tunde Kelani who came invited as a special guest.
Mr Kelani appraised the students for their level of enthusiasm and participation, and also took the time to showcases his just conclude movie, “Sidi Ilujinle”, an adaptation from Wole Soyinka’s lion and the Jewel.
In appreciation, the students presented an Honary award for youth development to Mr Tunde Kelani.
In attendance also were seasoned Yoruba actor Yomi Fashlanso and the lead act in the movie “Sidi Ilujinle”, Aisha Onitiri
#DAY3: SPORTS DAY
The third day of the student week was set aside for mentorship training/ career development for students, and grand finale of the provost cup football competition.
The day started at 10am with a two hour lecture on Public Relations and the branding industry by Bolaji Okusaga.
It was followed by an interactive section with participants, which included question and answers.
At mid day, the showdown for the grand finale game for the provost cup kicked started between female students of Hnd 2 and female students of ND 2.
The game ended 2goals to nil in favour of ND 2 students after about 9omins of play.
The second phase of the game between the male students of ND 1 full time and ND 3 part time end 2 – nil in favour of ND 1 full time students.
#DAY4; OLD SCHOOL DAY
The day opened with participants trooping into the school premises dressed in various throwback outfits, also known as old school attires.
Highlights of the day include a mock assembly session, games face off between participants and talent display from students who carted away different participants
#DAY5: PAGENTRY DAY
HIGHLIGHTS: This day saw the emergency of new ambassadors of the institution . The contestants after various forms of text assumed their offices in order of their performances as decided by appointed judges.
For the new academic year, Miss Prudence Alfred and Mr Emmanuel Iyamu emerged as Mr and Miss NIJ respectively, While Miss Jessica Kings and Mr Emmanuel Osere were crowned Mr and Miss Photogenic, in third place, Miss Damilola Shokoya and Mr James Abraham went home as Mr and Miss Amity.
#DAY 6: AWARD NIGHT
The grand finale of activities for the student week was a dinner night set aside to commend and award deserving staff and students of the institution who have done well in the past year
The uniqueness of this year's event was greatly applauded and described as "all inclusive", even as participatants went home in anticipation of a bigger event next year.
